KAGUM or Admire Ujungkulon is a form of cooperative group that is established by local people from the village of Taman Jaya. This village is located in the vicinity of Ujung Kulon National Park.
Koperasi KAGUM was formed in October 2000. This organization is designed by and for the people of Taman Jaya. By forming this cooperative organization, people from Taman Jaya and neighbouring areas in the buffer zone of Ujung Kulon National Park will have means of increasing their economic level through various alternative income generating activities. WWF Indonesia Ujung Kulon project has been assisting this cooperative group from the initial set up. This cooperative group is designed to handle Ecotourism activities in Ujung Kulon National Park.
Approximately 2, 500 people live in this village. Taman Jaya is located in the buffer zone of Ujung Kulon National Park, so The Park is readily accessible from this village.
People from Taman Jaya are mainly farmers and fishermen. Their levels of education ranges from elementary school to High school graduates. WWF Indonesia Ujung Kulon Project has been conducting community development programs in the buffer zone. Taman Jaya has become a major site for program implementations, as Taman Jaya possesses characteristics that are suitable for conservation-based community development.
In the previous years, several small community-based work groups have been established. These groups are mainly active in generating alternative income for their members. By doing so, people' s dependency upon natural resources will be diminished, and altered into many ways that guarantee sustainability of natural resources.
